my philosophy on the integration of technology in education
I believe that every child can learn and every child must learn. Learning is not reserved for anyone special and so under my care, each child will be catered for according to their learning abilities. With a target such as this, learning will definitely take place and each child will achieve his or her fullest potential and ultimately a good education. Since the institution of formal education in Jamaica in 1700’s the Ministry of Education and the teachers of various schools across the country have been trying to produce the best education there is to offer to students despite the odd measures over the years. The real reality of our classroom teachers in the delivering of top class education to our students is the lack of resources. Our teachers do not have sufficient or the necessary tools to use in the classroom. Many times things used by teachers –teaching aids- are things they buy for themselves with their own salary or things they solicit from members of the community. In comparison to developed countries where teachers are fully equipped with the necessary tools to be used in a classroom it is realized that teaching is more fun and appreciated by those students. More attention needs to be paid to the resources lacking in our schools. If these resources are provided for teachers then the execution of lessons would be of good quality, therefore, producing excellent boys and girls. In this new technology era it is evident that the development to the education system is a must. I look forward for the day when an institution whether primary or secondary in a rural area is fully furnished with all the luxuries that should be found in a classroom; examples overhead projectors and computer/s in every class. This can help to make the profession of teaching easier and different aspects less time consuming and students will learn because they are fascinated by technology.
In our society there is a weakness on the side of parents concerning the education of their children. Many parents fail to mold their children into early education at home before formal education at school; instead this is left to the teacher to teach these children and they should learn in the same way as other children whose parents took the time to teach their children from an early stage in life. According to constructivist theorist, Jean Piaget, when children get the opportunity to acquire early education they perform excellent in the classroom. Most times they are the teachers’ favourites because they grasp concepts faster but, than other students in the class who grasp concepts at a slower pace. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t, and oftentimes they get lost in the process of acquiring a good education. This is as a result of teachers work load and the over populated classes with one teacher. Most times the needs of many children are not met and they feel locked up in a world all by them self; with a feeling that no one cares. That was pretty much how I felt during my tenure of acquiring primary education. No early education, neglected in the classroom and so it was until I was out. Today there are many students like myself in the classroom who is waiting for that moment. That moment when one teacher can look beyond the frailty that comes with the job of teaching and change a life destine to fail.
The pupils in our classrooms today needs every help to make learning easy, fun and interesting. And, the implementation of technology in the classroom can address this need. This is why I further believe that technology should be incorporated into education, “it facilitates the teaching and learning process, it promotes problem solving and critical thinking skills, it helps in the development of lifelong learning, it enhances the various learning strategies required to meet the needs of the diverse population in schools and it supports the instructional process and classroom administration” (Revised Primary Curriculum 1999). As an emergent teacher it is my aim to raise the quality of education offered to students by using technology in the classroom which will be an asset to students learning.
The End.
